Budget Priorities
We are all feeling the pain of the recent collapse of Wall Street and the national economy, including the states. Colorado has a budget of about $18 billion and a constitutional requirement to balance the budget. Colorado faces hurdles that other states do not in that many of our budget limitations are in our Constitution, leaving discretion to the legislature over only about 18% of the budget. The state could close 16 of our departments and still not balance the budget given the drop in revenue and other limitations. It is our goal to soften the blow for suffering families and create jobs to get every Coloradan back to work, thoughtfully cut the budget as required by the Constitution, and position Colorado for a quick and strong recovery.
