Colorado State Senator Jeanne NicholsonDENVER -- The Colorado Youth Corps Association (CYCA) named Senator Jeanne Nicholson (D-Gilpin County) Legislator of the Year for 2012, along with Representative Millie Hamner (D-Dillon).

“Senator Jeanne Nicholson understands that we urgently need solutions for land, water, and energy challenges in our state.  She knows that we must empower every Coloradan, especially young Coloradans, so that they can effect positive change on our environment and communities,” said Jennifer Freeman, Colorado Youth Corps Association executive director.

Last year, Senator Jeanne Nicholson sponsored House Bill 12-1032, Forest Restoration Programs, with Representative Millie Hamner.  The legislation encourages youth conservation corps to participate in forest restoration projects.  As a result of HB 12-1032, youth conservation corps will engage more young people on forest restoration and beetle kill projects for the protection of residents, visitors, and our water and recreation resources.

“It is the perfect arrangement.  All of us benefit from the youth corps’ hard work and dedication to forest restoration, and our youth have the opportunity to perform meaningful work,” said Sen. Nicholson.

The Colorado Youth Corps Association will honor Senator Nicholson and Representative Millie Hamner on Monday, February 4 during the Youth Corps Awards Ceremony.  The Colorado Youth Corps Association (CYCA) is a statewide coalition of 10 accredited youth conservation corps that engage and train youth, young adults, and military veterans on land, water, and energy conservation projects.

Senator Nicolson serves Senate District 16, which includes Gilpin County, a small portion of Southwest Denver, and parts of western Boulder and Jefferson Counties reaching from Golden and Conifer to Superior and Lyons.  Senator Nicholson serves as the Democratic Caucus Chair for the Senate Majority.  She is also the chair of the Local Government Committee and a member of the Health and Human Services Committee.  Senator Nicholson is a public health nurse and former Gilpin County Commissioner.  For more information on Senator Nicholson, please visit http://www.senatorjeannenicholson.com.
