Newest Senator Sworn In to Fill Sandoval Vacancy
DENVER—"I do solemnly swear that I will support the Constitution of the United States and of the state of Colorado and faithfully perform the duties of the office of State Senator to which I was duly elected to the best of my ability, so help me God."
Today, in the Colorado Senate chambers, the Reverend Lucia Guzman, a long-time civic leader and business owner, took her oath of office becoming the newest Senator from Senate District 34. Sen. Guzman was sworn in by Colorado Supreme Court Justice Alex Martinez.
Senator Lucia Guzman (D-Denver) said, “Having lived and worked in the community here in Denver for so many years, it is a great honor to be given the opportunity to represent my friends and neighbors in the state legislature.”
Senate President Brandon Shaffer (D-Longmont) welcomed Sen. Guzman, “We are all happy to welcome Reverend Guzman to the Senate,” said President Shaffer. “Lucia has been a strong advocate for her community for many years. It is no surprise her neighbors chose her to fill this vacancy. We are all confident she will serve her constituents well, and we look forward to working with her and sharing her knowledge and experience.”
Sen. Guzman has a long, distinguished career in public service including serving as Executive Director of the Colorado Council of Churches from 1994-1999, serving on the Denver Public Schools Board of Education from 1999-2007, and from 2003 to the present, she serves as the Executive Director of the Agency for Human Rights and Community Relations for the City and County of Denver. She has also worked in the private sector as owner of Lucia’s Casa de Café in Northwest Denver.
Guzman replaces Senator Paula Sandoval (D-Denver) who left the Colorado Senate to serve on the Denver City Council.
